Great news. It’s normal.

So Jon and I discuss the depth and layers that you should better understand for yourself when maintaining that motivation.

Jon is a strength coach and college I met through another mastermind group. He’s got great experience with helping people improve their strength, and health, and especially improve their joint function, to be better athletes as they age.

We hadn’t been in touch in over a year, so we decided to do a chat-up conversation live on the podcast! We didn’t have a crazy goal with the podcast but instead, we felt we could see where the discussion would go when we review the current topics in the fitness world. Do you know anyone who’s suffered with bulimia?

This an incredibly difficult thing to overcome, but Kelsey was able to do just that AND change her mindset towards food and fitness forever.

She did gradually pull away from it but even after she still found herself so frustrated with her fitness because she always worked so hard with minimal success. That is until we got her on the right program, and fitness finally felt easy.

The amazing thing about working with Kelsey is that she completely trusted the process. Because she did that we were able to get amazing results. Even to the extent that I was with just how much we boosted her metabolism!

If you are someone who struggles with fitness, and can’t understand why it’s not working for you, this is a story for you.

In this episode, we talk about:

- How Kelsey started with body image issues

E92 - Workout 30 minutes or less? Rhyland’s experiment - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

How much strength training do you really need in a fat loss phase?

What is the minimum?

Is it 45 minutes?

Maybe 30 minutes?

When a person is in a fat-loss phase, the main goal of exercise is to prevent muscle loss, to improve strength, and keep the joints healthy.

But if you’re even an intermediate lifter, your body won’t build much muscle in this phase.

Why should we do a bunch of volumes when it is harder to recover?

So I wanted to challenge myself to do an experiment of 30 minutes or less with my strength training 4 days a week.

I have some good results, some bad results, and ugly results.

In this episode, I review all the major mistakes I made plus showing you how you could do an efficient fat loss training program if you wanted to.

In this episode I discuss:

-The 30-minute or less experiment set up

-The good, bad, and ugly results

-The 4-month evolution

-Value of how to track working sets

-Good/bad Use of Rest-pause technique

-When a variety of exercises is a bad thing

-Why DOMs can be overrated

-Why isolation exercises can be a waste of time

-How to properly address injuries

-Value of getting a coach

-My most recent ambition

If you know anyone who has a busy schedule but still has training goals, please share this episode with them!

I’ll warn you…This is a LONG episode because I had a lot to discuss.

But I made sure every lesson I had, was a lesson I think most people can learn from too.

If you found this episode valuable, please leave a review, and share this with someone else you think will enjoy this! I would appreciate it greatly.

See you in 2024!

Do you think powerlifting has to be hard?

Well, both Kurtis and I think it doesn’t have to be!

Kurtis Tallaire is a powerlifting coach of 6 years and was a former national-level competitive powerlifting for over 7 years himself. He not only has great accomplishments himself in the sport, but he has coached many athletes who crush competitions at a national level as well.

I met Kurtis through my friend Quinn, who was training for his first powerlifting meet. I remember hearing Quinn “These programs are honestly pretty easy.” whenever he was telling me about Kurtis's programming. And this is why I knew I was so interested in chatting with him about it. I know he was getting his athletes to do the right intensities with slow modest gains, which is my favourite style of lifting.

This chat is so much fun as we cover so many great concepts that can help anyone, even if you just want to be stronger a barbell lifts.

In this episode we discuss

- How he got into powerlifting

- Who were his influences in lifting

- How he plans his programs for his athletes

- What mistakes are people making in the Bench, Deadlift, and Squat?

- Really unique tip on improving grip strength

- How he uses deloads

This was truly a great learning experience for me to hear him speak about the major mistakes people make in the big 3, in so much great detail. I promise you’ll learn something great here.

Do you see yourself as a business athlete?

You need to perform in life so why wouldn’t you?

And can you imagine what AI could do to help you perform your best?

Kieth Bilous is the creator of the Business Athlete Performance Lab, which is an online community offering services to help you perform at your best. With the collaboration of highly qualified athlete performance coaches, Keith is building an interface using AI and a community that allows ambitious businessmen and women to accomplish their best physical goals and business goals.

Something really cool about this episode is that we make a shared podcast combining both the Live In The Lab and Strong Ambition Podcast in one. AND it is another in-person chat! This makes the whole podcast more of a real conversation, as we interview each other back and forth throughout the episode.

I’ve had Keith on the podcast before (Episode 3), and he’s got amazing insight as he is one of the most successful entrepreneurs I’ve ever met. And we discuss how he’s been able to make sure fitness and health were the backbone of his success.

In this episode we discuss

- What got Rhyland into online training

- Who does Rhyland help serve best?

- How social media has changed for businesses

- How Keith uses fitness to help his business

- What is the business athlete performance lab

- What are Keith’s big ambitions upcoming this year

There is something very authentic about this conversion because of being both in person, and because we sharing the discussion rather than just an interview. I had a lot of fun in this conversation and you will get to see a different side of Keith and me during this chat.

Did you know a lot has changed in the science research of muscle building?

We had a great discussion about it in this episode and you get to hear two great perspectives.

Rich has been more of a casual weight lifter for years, but has always seen himself as a ‘hard gainer.’ This insight is very helpful for you to hear as he has had more challenges with building muscle when compared to me. So I make sure to ask him questions on what specifically he has found made the biggest impact for him to gain weight when he wanted to.

AJ has been a trainer for over 20 years and has great experience with both putting on his own size and helping others put on muscle when they want to. He has great insight from both the theoretical perspective but also what he’s seen work in the gym effectively.

On top of this, I add my own experience of a recent experiment that helped me add weight very quickly.

In this episode we discuss

  • What is the most important thing for Rich when building muscle?

  • What is the flaw with worrying about perfect form?

  • Rhyland’s experiment with the Rest-pause technique

  • Do you need to program deloads?

  • AJ’s newest lesson on muscle building

This is another fun conversation as we are in even deeper to the whiskey at this point but we still get some great info for you to learn from.

This guy is a competitor…

You may have caught my interview with my other competitor but this guy is even more serious and VERY inspiring.

Josh Thompson was my competitor for Classic Bodybuilding Class B, and he not only won our category but he took the overall best in Classic Physique at the Van Dyke Classic. He then later went on to compete at Nationals with an incredible result.

The really awesome part about interviewing Josh was hearing his passion and love for the sport of bodybuilding. This isn’t just a recreational thing. Even though he does a lot of this in his spare time, he is determined to be the best bodybuilder he can be.

You will hear so much of his passion in this interview.

In this episode, we talk about

  • How he started in bodybuilding

  • Why he loves posing

  • How he planned his nutrition

  • How he planned his training

  • How he does his reverse diet

  • And his future competition ambitions

I can’t reiterate enough about how you can feel his love for the sport. This interview is a fun one because you hear how hard he works at it.

Even if you don’t love bodybuilding, listening to his level of dedication and discipline is incredibly inspiring.

Are you curious to know the whole plan I used during my bodybuilding prep?

It’s actually VERY simple!

My bodybuilding prep had about 4 phases. I wanted to give you a full summary of how my prep went from the initial build phase in 2022, all the way to the reverse diet of the summer.

However, in Part I, just focus on the first 3 phases, because they were set up with very healthy routines and tactics, that anyone could use for you their fat loss goals.

We break down the exact plan for Training, Movement, and nutrition, allowing you to hear my own assessment of phases, where I made changes, and what I would change in the future.

This episode is packed full of info

  • Where I started my Build phase

  • Adjustments/Changes to build phase

  • Reviewing Phase I, II, and III

  • Strength, Movement, and Nutrition plan and critiques

  • Great habits for you to try

  • Mindset tips for you to use

This was a fun episode and I had soooo much info to share.

It was really especially fun for me to go back on all my old info to really collect all the info that I collected over the spring on how everything evolved.

I hope you enjoy this episode, and if you do, please leave a review and share it with someone who needs some good advice for planning a fat loss phase!

Tune in for the next episode as we dive into part II, discussing the HARD tactics, and the reverse dieting after the show!

How much do you track when it comes to your health?

Wouldn’t you be curious to know what your body needs?

Marcell Hanson has studied her own biometrics for over 20 years and has created a system to allow anyone to figure out what their body needs to live optimally.

The cool part about Marcell’s story is that she didn’t come from start off with a healthy well-balanced diet. Rather, constantly consume readily available sugar and processed foods. She realized this was wreaking havoc on her health, she finally went to a naturopath that changed her perspective forever.

She has created a system called My Stable Table, that shows people how to determine their optimal hydration, exercise, nutrition, and sleep quality.

In this episode we talk about

  • How she got into the health and wellness space

  • Why she needed a naturopath

  • How chromium helped her

  • The impact Acupuncture made on her

  • How badly sugar impacted her

  • Her most recent ambition

One of my favourite episodes to date!

This is the 3rd edition of Whiskey and Barbells with my coach, mentor, and friend, AJ Zeglen.

AJ was my manager at Focus Fitness over 6 years ago, and he become one of my biggest mentors in strength training and nutrition. Within that time we also formed a great friendship with not only our shared passion for fitness but also our appreciation for good whisky, and deep thinking.

I knew going into the preparation for this bodybuilding show, AJ would have great knowledge to offer in bodybuilding as he had done 5 competitions himself. However, I also knew he would make this a fun experience as we could bounce ideas off each other and devise a great plan together, which is exactly what happened with a great result.

In this episode we had an opportunity to review the strategies we took during my prep and if they were the right choice or not.

We also just had a really fun conversation. We didn’t always stay on topic but that was the really fun part of it, and you can only expect when you drink whisky without standing up for over 2 hours.

The topics we discussed

  • How we started my prep

  • Lessons and changes we made during the first 2 phases

  • Use of PEDs in bodybuilding

  • Conventional vs. Sumo Dead Lifting

  • Our favourite Rocky movies and why

  • How AJ felt I looked compared to my competitors

  • Quick review on Reverse Dieting

We had an awesome time in this episode and had to cut it short (even though it’s over 2:45 minutes long), but we will be doing another one to discuss the reverse diet and build phases!

I am certain you will enjoy this episode, as it was legitimately one of my favourites to date.

I’ve needed to share this with you for far too long!

This is a great presentation and discussion Jason Brooks offered my clients during the lockdowns years ago, but I NEED to share this with you.

Jason Books is a performance psychologist and he works with high-level performers that what to achieve their best physically and mentally. He works with not just athletes, but also doctors and surgeons that need to be as focused as possible on their trade.

I had a great interview with Jason on Episode 4, in which we spoke about high-level performance psychology.

But this episode is different. This is about getting YOU a better mindset for diet and exercise consistency. I make this discussion a mandatory listen-to for my clients.

Jason has sooooo many amazing strategies in this it’s hard to pinpoint all of them. But I promise you when you finish listening to this, you will be able to immediately improve your mindset around diet and exercise.

Some of the great discussion topics

  • Understanding how to control what your can

  • Realizing what a ‘red flag’ statement is

  • Recognizing the “voice of resistance” and how to manage it

  • Using the practice of ‘Neutral thinking” to overcome laziness

  • How to improve your mental resilience within your training itself

At the end of the presentation, Jason even answers some questions live for my clients so you’ll be even more likely to relate to this discussion.

I highly suggest you save this episode to listen to again later! And please remember to share it, if you know someone struggling with consistency and motivation for training and nutrition.

Imagine meeting someone almost 10 years younger than you, and they have over 3x the experience of in your job.

That’s Alex Gamble to me.

Alex Gamble is an online training and nutrition coach, that specializes in fat loss transformations. When I say specializes, he’s actually helped over 1000 people transform their fitness!

When I first met Alex at a gym in Vegas, we were both in town for online coaches business conference. I initially thought he was a person who I thought was probably where near my experience level, turns out to be crushing this industry and has a GREAT amount of experience a knowledge to help people transform their fitness!

The really fun part of this interview is that I really wanted to explore his ideas of online training, in both the pros and cons aspects, plus dive into the system that makes him so successful.

This was literally an interview to help me become a better coach.

So you’ll learn along with me!

In this episode, we chat about

  • How Alex started

  • How he got great experience through being coached

  • The pros and cons of online training

  • His system for working with clients

  • Where do people make the biggest mistakes

  • What’s his more recent ambition

This interview allows you to really see some great insight into a very smart coach who values the sustainability and quality of his program.

This is super valuable, given so many people in the online space believe in a cookie-cutter approach to fitness, which isn’t just wrong. It actually can ruin fitness so for many people.

Terrific conversation, I’m sure you will learn a lot because I certainly did!

This is a VERY special podcast!

I’ve had the privilege of speaking with so many people on my podcast but Jordan is a special guest for me as an online training and nutrition coach.

Jordan Syatt is an online trainer himself and has been doing it for a very long time. Not only did Jordan build up a great following (over 840,000 Instagram followers), but he’s also done high-level powerlifting and jujitsu.

He is NOT an Instagram influencer type. As a matter of fact, he specifically lists his title as ‘Education’ on Instagram. And you’ll see within his content, he wants to generally help people, and help them with sustainable health in mind.

While also being hilarious.

I was initially introduced to his content last year, and of all the different accounts I followed, his content attitude, style, and overall ethics of his program I admired so much. He’s the online trainer I want to be like.

So this sit-down was SUPER special for me.

We talk about some awesome stuff!

  • How he started in online training

  • His strategies for helping people get started in fitness

  • His own struggles with binge eating

  • Our debate about the use of the carnivore diet

  • Carnivore vs. Plant-based

  • What’s the deal with fiber?

  • Advice for online trainers

  • His more recent ambition

I promise you that you will have fun in this episode!

This is a cool conversation!

Mindfulness is becoming more and more of a buzzword these days, but what does it really mean?

Well, Dr. Kraft gives you a much clearer understanding of it and how it can affect every cell in your body.

Dr. Reiner Kraft began his career in computer sciences but evolved his career by working with major tech companies, like Yahoo, to improve leadership skills. The major thing he focused on with the companies he was in, was improving Mindfulness, which would echo better performance throughout the culture of the company.

This is a really unique approach to focus on the amount of time someone is truly ‘Mindful’ throughout the day. He talks about how he helped companies even track the amount of time they would be ‘mindful’ throughout the day, rather than distracted. And given he worked with tech companies he even gave them really cool metrics to track so they could see their improvements through numbers.

We have a great discussion seeing how he evolved his strategies, and what strategies he recommends people use to improve their mindfulness throughout the day. We even touch on the effect mindfulness has on your ability to improve mood, but also physical well-being. He dives into the concept that being more mindful may even help all the cells in your body receive nutrients better.

In this episode, we talk about

  • Where he began his career

  • How he got into mindfulness

  • His systems he created to track mindfulness

  • How his systems help corporations

  • How mindfulness may help all the cells in your body

  • How mindfulness may affect your ability to absorb nutrients

This conversation was super helpful even for me to literally become more aware of how I can implement more of these tactics in my life, and how you can do the same!

Joe Marcoux is the founder of the SOS Dojo, which is a Sales Objection System mentorship program. He began his journey in fitness, being an aspiring physique competitor, and took over his own business of selling fitness equipment. After selling his own shares in a major company, he later ventured into mentoring others to handle sales conversations, and more specifically the objections that may come.

I met Joe through the business mastermind group I was in, as he was a Winnipeger like myself, so we instantly connect and hit it off well. His energy and charisma immediately gripped me (which you will hear in this episode).

What is extra interesting about this interview with Joe, is that he didn’t just go through tough times to be able to make his way through business, but he speaks about a VERY deep betrayal he had to deal with, that nearly psychologically broke him. (You need to hear the story from him).

But he overcame this challenge and he was able to come back with an even more positive mindset that helped him grow into the amazingly positive and high-vibration man he is today.

In this episode, we talk about

  • How he got into sales

  • His mentors

  • How he helped build a very big brand

  • How he transitioned into creating the SOS Dojo

  • The biggest betrayal he had to deal with

  • How it helped him grow

  • His new ambition and direction

What have I been up to the last couple of months?

I’ve been battling Sober October and getting lean for my Halloween costume!

This BUT this Sober October Challenge was different.

I’ve done sobriety very well, but I wanted to lean into other things I’m possibly too dependent on.

So I went after No TV and No Sweeteners (More specifically diet pop and products with sucralose).

This was BIG for me! Because I LOVE TV at the end of the day and I rely on sweeteners a lot.

The question I posed to myself and my clients who joined me on their own challenge is “Who am I without this? Is it a better version of me?”

This during this month I also had a Halloween costume planned. But the thing was this costume requires me to be shirtless and I wasn’t quite content in my leanness going into the fall.

So I did a BIG cut and lost probably nearly 10lbs over 4-6 weeks.

Topics I cover

  • Why TV and sweetener

  • How it felt to go without

  • How it helped or didn’t

  • What I plan on doing moving forward

  • My bulk into the cut for the fall

  • My plan for a body-building show in the spring

Really fun conversation this week!

Deciding to be a goalie when I was maybe 11 or 12 years old was one the biggest decisions I ever made.

Why?

Well this episode we dive into just that AND how this year tested me more than ever going back into being a goalie competitively again.

This episode will dive into some fun topics and great lessons for you

  • How I started in goaltending in hockey

  • The mental challenges of being a goalie

  • When things are going really bad

  • How these challenges parallel to life and fitness goals

  • This years experience going back after over 10 years off

  • How we finished the year

This was a fun podcast to do because I can’t stress enough that I really was mentally tested this year by going back to being a goalie.

It was an absolute battle at the start but I transitioned that from a strong mindset.

Remember to share this episode maybe with someone know who loves hockey!

Brent Lohmer is a strength and conditioning coach I met through Maverick Coaching Academy, and has recently become a colleague I meet with to talk about business with.

Brent has an amazing story, of coming into fitness with an immediate ambition to want to be in great shape, and become a trainer. He later discovered an obsession that led him to an eating disorder, in which he was even admitted to the hospital! He was able to overcome this but not without hard work.

In this episode we discuss:

  • His upbringing in small town

  • Being a goalie and his parental influences

  • How he got into fitness as a passion

  • Being admitted to a hospital for an eating disorder

  • Later managing a binge eating disorder

  • How he was able to use Stoicism to overcome this challenge

Truly an incredible story, and I really hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Please remember to share this, especially if you think someone could be helped by hearing this message!

Jon is a strength and conditioning coach and a college I chat with weekly about training. Jon came from a background of higher level basketball, but actually had some challenges with finding the appropriate trainers.

He even had a trainer tell him he was too tall to squat!

Because of that he’s on a mission to help others realize they can, and they don’t have to be their own injuries, and everyone's an athlete in his eyes.

In this episode we discuss great ideas

  • Where Jon started out in basketball

  • The injuries and setbacks he had to deal with

  • He sees as problems in the shoulder

  • What is Activation?

  • Shoulder mobility suggestions

  • What’s his thoughts on Knees over toes guy?

  • What is Jon’s current ambition?

Given this is the official start to the second year, I had to have my great friend on again, Ray Lavoie

He was my first guest, and if you didn’t listen to the first episode, go back, and get some background on the topic of flow, and it is still the most downloaded episode to date.

Ray is a Ph.D. professor and researcher for Merrimack University, with his main focus being in the realm of “Flow”.

This is a very challenging topic because it’s so subjective and little measurable research has been done, until now!

This episode we dive into

  • How he does his research and challenges with it

  • The amazing discoveries he’s making

  • How he sets up flow for himself

  • How curiosity can help individuals improve their chance of flow

  • An incredible charity he’s a part of - Higher Learning Foundation that is giving student tools to improve their mental health

Such an incredibly fun conversation with my mentor and friend AJ Zeglen.

This is our 2nd time doing the Whiskey and Barbells discussion, but first time it was less about training and nutrition, this time we stayed on point and had great discussion, despite the solid number of whiskeys.

We broke this up into 2 parts, as it was a FOUR HOUR conversation, because AJ and I can just keep going when we get into these topics.

This first part we discuss:

·       Training longevity - Can we get stronger as we age?

·       Training volume - how much is really needed?

·       What actually helps drive hypertrophy?

·       Not getting 'married' to one idea or belief

·       Effective guidelines for nutrition but individualization for meal plans

·       Discussion of "choice" for effective healthy living

After just over 2 hours, I needed a bathroom break and so we pick up this conversation after that break.

Tune in to the next episode to hear more awesome discussion.

Remember to like, subscribe, and share this episode with a friend!

Lucas Root has a fascinating story about following money and working on wall street until that seemed to ruin his health and wellbeing. After just one simple deep conversation with his wife, he learnt there must be a new path.

He went out on his own to start his own new business venture and grinded his way to have a successful brand. Recently he’s discovered a way to help individuals working from how to optimize at home and work environment.

A real interesting story with some great tips you can use:

Alicia Castaneda is a coach for individuals who want to improve their relationship with food. I was introduced to her through my business coach, Gavin McHale, and she offered to run a free seminar for my clients on emotional eating.

Within this seminar Alicia amazed me and my clients with her depth and understanding of how many layers we can look at our emotions that are attached to food. Even within the first seminar My clients and I all took away vital lessons to use.

In this podcast I dive into even more details to give some great lessons and tips that anyone can use:

  • Her background and how Alicia battled depression and anxiety

  • How Alicia started her new path with her own education

  • The foundation of understanding how we reflect on emotions

  • How to improve our emotional eating habits

  • How to manage challenging situations and holiday events

  • Different strategies to work on progress without having to focus on calories or weight

This episode was a ton of fun to hear her story and her in-depth knowledge of what it takes to improve one's relationship with food and more importantly themselves.

George Ryles is a Strength and Conditioning coach that has travelled the world to improve his knowledge around optimizing performance for athletes that deal with injuries.

I met George when I was experiencing a terrible shoulder issue that prevented me from doing any upper body strength. After he exposed me to some of his therapy experience, I was able to heal my shoulder so well I was benching my heaviest weight the day before my surgery. He changed my perspective of movement patterns.

Within this episode we dive deep into so much:
- What made him ambitious in sport
- Reflecting back on now realizing he had ADHD undiagnosed
- What perspectives of biomechanics for sport and training he's been influenced on
- Talking about his mentors that opened up a new way to look at movement
- His own model for how he wants to help individuals like himself

This is an awesome episode if you like to know the biomechanics of it movement. With George's wonderful accent and his ADHD mind, he takes down on a fascinating rabbit hole of understanding how movement works in the body.

This is just part 1 as I will have him on again very soon to open up that can of worms he discusses in this episode!

Nate Ruban was a former colleague of mine from Focus Fitness. He was an excellent strength and conditioning coach, as well as being an Athletic Therapist. After years of working at focus he started to look how his knowledge and experience could give him other opportunities in the realm of kinesiology, as it can be very tough for trainers to make a living.

So he then found an opportunity to move out west to BC to work as an ergonomic advisor to workers on how to better work their jobs, safely and effectively without chronic pain.

Ergonomics is the study of efficiency in the workplace environment, and when I came across this in school, it opened my mind to recognize how poorly set up we are.

What’s really interesting about this conversation is so many, if not all people, will have something about their work environment that could be causing micro traumas to their joints and body. Nate is able to uncover some great concepts that everyone should be aware of

We discuss

  • The difficulty of being an Athletic Therapist

  • The challenges of him moving his life

  • The differences and similarities between AT and being an ergonomic advisor

  • What are the main mistakes made by people in their workplace

  • Are standing desks good?

  • What other equipment should one invest in?

  • Fundamental principles and tools to use to improve your workplace

  • What exercises should someone think about doing to help?

Although ergonomics isn’t the “sexy” study of human movement, it’s actually one of if not the most relevant to most of our lives, as we spend most of the day doing our work. It’s a great conversation and can really open up your mind to appreciate how to improve your workplace.

I learnt a lot and I'm very certain you will too, especially if you find yourself behind a desk, or getting issues with chronic pain from work.

Robert Broten is a mental health and performance coach, and works with hockey players, to help control their emotions, and perform at their highest level.

Robert has an interesting story to arrive in this career. He came from the same area as I did, near Starbuck, Manitoba. Also started as farm worker, but his initial career path took him into the city, eventually making good money as a sales representative. However, this didn’t give him the fulfillment he desired in life for a career. He felt something was missing.

Robert later took a huge leap and invested in Neurolinguistic Programing (NLP) coaching and found a new passion. He realized that he could take this new education to one of his old passions of hockey to help young and experienced hockey players understand their emotions and mindsets to perform at their very best.

This episode we take a deep dive into

-        The challenges Robert had to go through to change careers

-        The major risks he took

-        What drove him to make change

-        The mindset challenges that most athletes must over come

-        Great mindset tips on how to ensure any one can perform at a higher capacity

-        How to communicate with your inner child to better execute your day

This is a terrific conversation as we dive deep into what holds so many people back from things they want to accomplish. I learnt great tactics myself that I current use now that have been working great. (Specifically, the inner child stuff).

Tons to enjoy and I recommend you share this to anyone you know who wants great mindset improvement for how they perform every day!

This is a fun one! The VERY first in-person podcast episode to date!

This is a two-part episode series, so in this first one, we caption the topic of sustaining fat loss!

AJ has great experience in helping coach some physique competitors in reverse dieting after a competition. Given AJ has been a trainer and nutrition coach for over 20 years, he has a great perspective on seeing how someone can sustain fat loss.

Rich is an athletic therapist and gives a good perspective on different topics from a therapy standpoint, but also as someone closer to the general population person just trying to be in good shape. Given AJ and I are both trainers, we have biased perspectives, so Rich’s feedback on many topics is very helpful.

In this episode we discuss

  • Reverse dieting and how to do it

  • Mistakes I made in his reverse diet

  • How reverse dieting went VERY well for my client

  • Can you sustain under 10% body fat all year round?

  • Difference in body fat measuring tools

  • What does someone need to consider sustaining their fat loss

This is a really fun one and a lot of very practical tips that you should be aware of when you want to keep the weight off, after your fat loss program!

This is a fascinating story.

Did you realize that food could be the root of someone's depression?

Evan Transue has this experience. Growing up he didn’t have much consideration for his food choices. But eventually, once he started supplementing with better vitamins, he noticed his mental health improved. This led him on his journey to find out as much as he could about how food can help someone physically and mentally.

Evan is now a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition system, but he likes to call himself a Nutrition detective. He can help show people now only the foods they may have sensitivities that are affecting their health, but also how to apply the real practice of improving their life away from major stressors.

We have a great conversation, about how he evolved his lifestyle, but also the practical lessons for you as a listener, to appreciate what to look for.

In this episode, we talk about

  • How he came from depression and suicidal thoughts

  • What a multivitamin did for his mental health

  • What motivated him to stay on the healthy eating path

  • Can someone eat sugar?

  • What is the difference between food allergy, intolerance and sensitivity

  • How do they test sensitivity

  • What should an individual look for without a full test

We have a great discussion and even practical applications for what you could do if you wanted to do your own elimination diet.

Remember to share this with someone who you think is interested in nutrition!

Are you curious to hear from someone who outdid me in bodybuilding?

Chris did just that!

Chris Watson is an engineer by trade, but bodybuilding become a hobby and great passion over the last few years.

He initially just started getting into fitness to improve his fitness and overall health in 2021. He saw great success in this, and after getting DEXA scan to find out he was under 10% body fat already, he was encouraged to try his first bodybuilding show.

He smashed the competition and won first overall in bodybuilding and went on the pro-qualifier in which he placed 6th!

This is SOOOO impressive because it was just his first competition but he did this WITHOUT a coach.

This year we shared the stage to compete in bodybuilding overall, and he beat me. Which I think with how lean he was, is VERY fair.

This is a really fun conversation because we dive into all the strategies he used for his prep and we compared them to mine.

In this episode, we talk about

  • How he got into bodybuilding

  • How he planned for his first event

  • How prepared for this show

  • His nutrition progression

  • His strength training progression

  • His cardio protocol

  • His after stage

  • What he plans for next

Super fun conversation, and I’m excited to chat with him again in the future to see how his building strategies are going, and how they may be different from mine.

Curious about how a bodybuilding prep coach prepares his clients for the stage?

Want to hear how my posing coach felt about my physique?

In this episode, we dive into all of that and more.

Brett Riffel is a fat loss coach and specializes in helping people prepare their training and nutrition for fitness competitions. He works with both men and women, in many different categories, and everything from beginners to those preparing to head to national level competition!

This year I hired Brett as my posing coach, given he had a great deal of experience as a prep coach and was very familiar with the stage. He was a massive impact on me, given my first show, I hardly knew how to hold my positions on stage and it was a large downfall that year. But with his help this year, I walked away with 4 metals.

Brett didn’t just give me good posing routines, as I could see he was invested in my success and we would constantly chat about how my coach and I were planning out our prep. He would still give great advice, and we even made nutritional adjustments based on his recommendations.

I wanted to dive into how he works with his clients so I could see how my style may have been different from his.

In this episode, we talk about

  • How he got into the sport and coaching

  • Where he starts the preparation

  • Nutritional strategies and progressions

  • Training strategies and progressions

  • How he felt about my physique

  • His thoughts on me competing in the future

We had sooooo much info to talk about the hour and a half he gave me flew by!

So you’ll hear us agree we need to do a part II very soon.

I have A LOT to tell you about the bodybuild competition prep!

You gotta listen to this episode.

In a timeline sense, I am 90% of the way to the competition. But in a mindset sense, it’s really just started getting interesting and really tough.

The last update I did was over 2 months ago, and I realized once I set my notes up for this episode I should have done something sooner, because I have pages of notes to go over with how my last 2 months went.

And NOW it’s getting really interesting.

This is a long podcast episode because I wanted to give you a solid update AND keep it present while I’m in the prep.

This is because they are more top of mind and remember more of the challenges and changes that came up.

Plus, there are amazing moments of mindset breakthroughs when you’re going through the toughest things. And so I felt getting an episode in while I’m VERY close and going through the hardest days, would be a very REAL reflection of how things are going.

And I give you a great discussion with AJ (training and nutrition coach) and Brett (posing coach) to discuss peak week strategies!

There is SOOOO much in this episode but here are the highlights

  • Reflection of March training - Good and bad

  • Reflection on April training - Good and bad

  • Reflection on nutrition for the last 2 months

  • How and why I got down to 1400 Calories with cardio

  • Peak week discussion with AJ and Brett

  • Big mindset shifts that have changed me during this prep

What is really valuable for you, is that the first 3/4 of this prep, was done very healthily and there are MANY helpful lessons everyone could use in a phase loss program.

And even on the darker days I’m in now, I feel like the mindset pieces I over in this episode can help you in any of your own challenges.

I really hope you enjoy this episode!

This is a fun discussion!

So many topics covered but Ben gives some amazing perspectives on so many ideas.

Ben Smith is a fitness and nutrition coach, Army Veteran, and I’ll even say Mindset Coach, as he has his program based on the bedrock of good mindset strategies.

Although Ben had a history of being in athletics and looking through the strength and conditioning lens, after years of meeting new clients, he started realizing an overall holistic approach that values the mind and body as one, he changed his practice for the better.

Ben also has a really unique experience of being the training and nutrition coach for a performing and traveling band, which made this discussion super insightful to see how his different strategies help people in unique ways.

My favorite part was discussion the about cold therapy, as he is a BIG advocate for it, and I have my feelings against it for specific situations. So we have a fun friendly debate!

There was A LOT covered in this chat but here are some key parts you’ll want to tune into here.

In this episode, we chat about

  • How get got into being a trainer

  • What going through the military was like

  • His struggles with Disordered Eating

  • How do musicians train?

  • Hot and Cold Therapy

  • Why wouldn’t you use cold?

  • Breathe Work

  • Mindset Tactics he recommends

  • What’s his most recent ambition

This was truly a wonderful chat, and I highly recommend you check out Ben’s stuff. Even within this chat, I can tell he’s a super calming, kind, and empowering soul.

Benedict Beaumont is a breathwork coach and educates others to become breathwork coaches. He initially started his path as a musician, then into being a teacher but he felt a bigger calling of being out in the world, and find his true purpose.

Within a long journey of truly searching for enlightenment, after many years of meditation training and yoga, he finally stumbled upon someone teaching breathwork.

He said with the first 5 breaths he found the enlightenment he’d always been searching for. He could feel something truly change within himself.

This conversation is extra special…

He actually runs us through a breathwork session!

In this episode, we talk about

  • How he transitioned from musician to teacher

  • How he found his calling in breathwork

  • What breathe work is and what various types

  • What benefits does breathwork have

  • Walks us through a breathwork session for 3 minutes (very effective)

  • We discuss body wisdom vs. thinking

  • And how he helps many others with his breathwork education

This was a really cool and different episode. I thoroughly enjoyed it, as you’ll hear I had my own little breakthrough within the little 3-minute session.

Want to hear how Trainers think alike?

So Daniel Raz Israeli is also a fellow online trainer and in this episode, we get to dive into how he helps people lose over 30lbs just at home!

Daniel started his passion for fitness in university, despite other school colleagues wanting to do physio, he felt the passion to help people with confidence through movement.

I was super excited to dive into how he helps people by using only body weight movements because I am more of a gym goer myself.

This conversation was particularly fun because we dove into common challenges both see with clients when it comes to nutrition, training, and consistency.

I even challenge some of my own problems with at-home strength training, in which he discusses how he manages to overcome obstacles with limited equipment.

And after this discussion with him, it even changed my perspective of at-home body weight workout actually maybe being even better than going to the gym for some people!

Main topics we cover in this conversation

  • How he great up and got started in fitness

  • Why he decided to become a trainer

  • Why he feels at home bodyweight workout works well

  • How he manages to help clients with nutrition

  • How to manage client’s ideas around having a slow Metabolism

  • His ideas for at-home training of his clients

  • The biggest problems he has to help them overcome

I had a lot of fun with it and I’m certain you’ll enjoy it as well!

Allan Misner has a fascinating story.

When Allan was working in a Fortune 500 company, but not taking good care of his health, he had a life-changing perspective. One day by watching his daughter compete in a CrossFit competition, he realized he wanted to be participating, not just a spectator in her life.

Now over the age of 40, this didn’t come easy. But he set on a determined path to losing over 40lbs of body fat, and gaining 10lbs of muscle! He is now running his own online training and nutrition program, and a very successful podcast (with over 565 episodes) called 40+ Fitness.

This is a great transformation story and Allan has awesome simple analogies for everyone to appreciate what it takes to change your life so drastically.

In this episode, we talk about

  • What inspired his change

  • How he trained to keep up with his 21-year-old daughter in his 40s during a tough mudder run!

  • The roadblocks he had to overcome

  • How he left the office and started his training business

  • What principles he recommends to his clients

  • How he started his podcast and what it’s about

  • What his book is about

  • His most recent ambition for healthy living

Truly a terrific conversation with Allan and I highly recommend you check out his podcast and book!

We are at 50 episodes!

Wow! That’s 2 years and it goes by quickly!

In this very special episode, I wanted to give you something really awesome and different so you get to see a LIVE planning session with me and AJ Zeglen!

If you’re not familiar with AJ, he’s my old boss, mentor, and now whiskey-drinking buddy.

He’s been a strength coach for nearly 20 years, and he’s done 4 bodybuilding shows himself!

AJ actually helped coach me on my first show and I wanted him to help me with my 2nd so we can put out heads and knowledge together to do even BETTER than I did last time.

I had a show I did 4 years ago, and since then I have learned a lot, not to mention the research has changed a great deal in both Nutrition and Training!

So we do a full planning session with each other life for you to hear!

In this episode we discuss

  • What my next phase of training should look like

  • What we understand about hypertrophy and how it’s changed

  • How I could roughly plan my nutrition in the 16-week prep

  • How will my training change in the cut phase

  • How he will help hold me accountable for progress

Super fun episode and I know you’ll get a lot out of it!

Dead Cordingley is currently doing his Ph.D. at the University of Manitoba in the Applied Health faculty. Within his experience of doing his Masters, and working as a research associate for so many years, he’s not only familiar with the papers, but also the process of how the research is discovered.

I met Dean at Focus Fitness while working as a research associate. Any time I got a chance, I would ask him about what he’s seen in the research about different topics. Dean would always have great new and exciting research facts for me.

And that’s why I was so excited to have him on this episode! I dove into some burning questions I had about what he’s seen. The great thing he always says is “It depends” and this is a great sign he knows, nothing is absolute and context matters.

In this episode, we talk about

  • How he got into research

  • What research says about hypertrophy/Muscle building training

  • How hard should you train?

  • How to be cautious of overtraining

  • How to lose body fat and gain muscle

  • New interesting research he’s discovered

Nada Hassan is a physical therapist, but also a competitive powerlifter herself. Because of that, she specializes in helping barbell athletes overcome their injuries, and feel strong again.

Not only does she have a great experience in powerlifting…she’s actually set a Canadian record in deadlifting!

This last August I had Nada reach out to me on Instagram, one day when I was complaining about my knee issue in a comments section.

After seeing her Instagram, I was excited, as she already works with barbell athletes, but then I saw her deadlift numbers…

445lbs Deadlift, Squat 355lbs, Bench 265lbs. at 63KG bodyweight. That’s amazing.

In This Episode, We Talk About:

  • Her history of sports when she started

  • How she set records

  • The use of RPE in lifting

  • Conventional vs. Sumo Deadlifting

  • Fundamental advice to prevent injuries

  • Her powerlifting ambition coming up

Reed Davis is a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner (HHP) and Certified Nutritional Therapist (CNT), an expert in functional lab testing and holistic lifestyle medicine. He is the Founder of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® (FDN) and the FDN Certification Course with over 4,000 graduates in 50 countries

In this discussion, we dive into what he’s discovered about food sensitivities with the appropriate diagnostic testing, but also discuss the terrific foundational principles to help other aspects of a person's life that affect wellness.

Reed does a great job of describing what it truly means to have a Holistic approach to healing someone because he “treats the patient, not the paper.” In other words, he looks at all the factors that can affect someone’s health as a whole, that than just something that a test result may show on a piece of paper.

In this episode we discuss

  • How he got into functional medicine

  • His food sensitivity diagnostic tools

  • The principles he teaches his students on how to treat clients

  • The challenges within modern science

  • How adrenal fatigue and thyroid function aren’t handled properly

  • The program he’s created to educate others

Mitch Calvert has a sports writer and has now been an online trainer for over 10 years (before it was cool). However, what makes his story great is that he came from being a very high BMI to what would be classified as obese, and he said to himself “I’m not going just be a statistic.” He has turned his life to now be a fit dad that trains over 150+ clients in the city and helps them get great results.

I met Mitch through an online business coaching mentorship program, and he reached out to our group as a fellow Winnipegger. I very much appreciated Mitch’s kindness to reach out to me, but also I was fascinated to see his story was so different because he came from being very overweight and had to battle into a healthy lifestyle. But he also doesn’t talk about extreme behaviours or say that you need 6-pack abs, but rather finding the health and fitness that empowers you to live a happy lifestyle.

In this episode, we talk about

  • How he got into fitness and online training

  • His biggest mindset shifts to overcome

  • The tactics he tried and the ones that helped him the most

  • How he helps his clients manage their change

  • His current fitness and diet goals

This is a great story about overcoming an identity and helping others through that journey.

How could you even know that answer?

Jen and I dive deep into this and I think we found a great answer for it… Through curiosity and discomfort.

Jen Hernandez was another friend I met through maverick coaching, and she specializes in helping people discover confidence and clarity in their life. You may say “Life Coach” but I think that’s too simple and you’ll see why when you hear her speak.

Jen went through a long tough haul in the military but her soul became restless. We dive into her challenging evolution but also how you need to have curiosity about your own character in order to live a life you love.

In the episode we discuss

  • Her experience in the military

  • Why the military wasn’t good for her

  • How she changed her path and her identity

  • What is it to be authentic?

  • How can others find a life of love?

  • Her amazing new ambitious journey

Did you have a childhood dream of playing a sport but felt like you didn’t have the talent?

Well so did Matt Bailey, but he didn’t let that stop him. I met Matt at Focus Fitness, over 10 years ago, and he was just starting off playing junior hockey.

Matt has an incredible story of initially being denied by teams at a young age, but one day making his way to playing a great hockey career in the AHL and European hockey leagues!

In this episode we discuss

  • Matt grew up in hockey

  • The influences that drove him forward

  • The biggest adversity he had to overcome in the sport

  • The mindset skills that helped him move forward

  • How he overcame a major injury that helped him in the long run

  • Where he has his current ambitions

I loved his inspirational mindset in this discussion, and I’m certain you’ll appreciate it as well.

Shaquelle Hibbert is a kinesiologist, that specializes in those challenged with chronic conditions, especially diabetes, to reclaim their health and lifestyle. What’s really special about her approach is focusing on improving their perceptions of what ‘health’ can be defined as.

Shaq and I come from very different approaches, as she focuses on intuitive eating, I focus on educating with more metrics of calorie tracking. She has her individuals set their own perception of what a healthy body is, whereas I encourage individuals to strive for leaner physiques.

What makes this conversation great is we both agree on what health is or what it can be for so many people.

Topics we discussed

  • Shaquelle’s upbringing and how she got into fitness

  • Her own fitness journey and experience of being prediabetic

  • How she works with her clients to redefine health

  • The HAES movement and how it can be good or bad

  • What ambitions does she have for herself in fitness

This is a really cool conversation as we both seek similar things but with different goals in mind.

Remember to share this with anyone who has body image challenges as Shaquelle will be an excellent coach to support you!

This is a bit of a public video journal, as I hope to be transparent in my challenges, so others can relate the struggle and learn from my mistakes.

Adele Spraggon is an award-winning author and international speaker. She has set out on a journey to figure out why the personal and profession development methodologies didn’t work for her for so many years.

She discovered after she went back to school to learn about neurology and behaviour sciences, that there was simply more to the picture. From her stance we’re looking at the wrong concept. Rather than looking at the Goal, look at the pattern of thinking, and you’ll find you become the person that will achieve the goal.

In the episode we discuss

  • Where she started her own path

  • How she struggled herself with personal development

  • Going back to school to relearn behaviour change

  • Discovering the behaviour is about patterns

  • Her 4 step system to create new patterns

  • Discussing why this is such an effective strategy

  • How this can be applied to food or exercise habits

  • And her future ambitions

Truly a fascinating perspective of behaviour change and I know I look forward to getting her book myself and giving this 4 step system a try.

Continuation of last week's podcast conversation.

Again, I can't state enough how fun it is to talk with AJ, as he's an very insightful person but also a weight lifting bro like myself. Even after this conversation I walked away with a little more wisdom from him.

In this conversation there are a few different topics

- AJ's goals for new year for Strength

- Problems with motivation

- Problem with Boxing systems of teaching

- Using "drill-like" mindset to implement habits

- People are the experts of their own problems

- What else did AJ learn from this past year?

- Good teachers vs. Bad Professors

- Barefoot style training vs. Running shoes for training

- What else is AJ focusing on the new year

- What's Rhyland's word for the new year?

I hope you learn a lot from this series and please leave a comment on what you thought about whiskey and barbells!

We will very likely do more in the future and would love to answer any questions you have.

Over the years, Christmas has been both so much fun but also disappointing and fueled my poor eating behavior.

The mindset was to diet super well until the holidays, then 'Jump Off The Wagon' and binge eat until it hurt my stomach.

This podcast I wanted to tell my story about how it's evolved so much, and I can honestly say I'm super proud of the person I'm evolving into.

In this episode I discuss:

  • My holiday yo-yo eating traditions

  • What excessive restriction led me to

  • The evolution I took to improve my relationship with food

  • Open discussion about my relationship with weed and how it affected my eating

  • The major lessons I've learnt that helped me finally get control and stop repeating my old behaviour

If you have had any issues with controlling yourself around the holidays and food, this is a great podcast for you to hear the strategies I used each year to get better and better at controlling my behaviour AND still enjoying the foods I love.

This week I wanted to go solo and breakdown something that I’ve had a long poor relationship with - Metabolism.

I hated it when I would hear people say “You have a slow metabolism.” It didn’t make sense to me. I also got really confused by the idea of a “broken” metabolism. What was the missing picture?

So this week I will break this shit down. I explain what goes into metabolism and I answer a great question about strength training for boxers.

This episode has some awesome lessons for metabolism:

- What are the 4 parts of metabolism

- What is controllable and noncontrollable?

- What is a fast metabolism vs. slow metabolism?

- How does your lifestyle development around food effect it?

- What behaviours do you need to work on?

- Is cardio good or bad?

- What should you take away from this?

For the boxing strength lesson

- Fundamental focus for a strength coach

- Where most boxers should start

- How many days a week

- What does a typical split look like

- Some ideas for exercises

I had a lot of fun in this episode because when you give me a topic and mic I will go to town. Some very valuable information for anyone to learn about their metabolism better and habits around it.

Laura Ceccarelli (M.A.) completed her master’s in Kinesiology at the University of Manitoba and is currently enrolled in the doctoral program in Clinical Psychology.

Her research examined the influence of self-compassion on athlete’s psychological and physiological responses to stress and recovery and better understanding mental health among student athletes.

She has also been involved in research projects examining the impact of psychological factors on engagement in physical activity for individuals trying to increase their activity or maintain health behaviour in the midst of health challenges (chronic disease, pregnancy, and post-partum).

Laura is passionate about mental health and supporting mental wellness in the pursuit of health and performance.

In this episode we dig into her research and mindset tools for behaviour change including:

  • Her research discovering the stress athletes experience when remembering past events

  • Understanding your why and keeping it close

  • Creating habits on a small scale

  • Self compassion to improve adherence

This was a really fun conversation as we really dug into all the fundamental practices that individuals need to consider when trying to work on behaviour change.

Almost all of these strategies are a part of the Mindset toolkit provided to my clients with the NEM series.

Lindsay is a copywriting coach with maverick coaching academy and has recently started her own breathwork coaching for her Goddess Circle women’s group.

Lindsay has been an amazing coach for myself throughout the time I’ve spent at Maverick Coaching Academy for fitness and therapy coaches. I still remember the first day I met her in person, without hesitation and huge smile she came up and hugged me. We had only met online up to this point a few times and she came in like a ball of energy and love.

Lindsay has an incredible story of changing the norms and chasing passion. She started out as a librarian, but recognized her lack of content with what she was doing and pursued a career as a personal trainer. She then evolved to be a copywriting coach with the Maverick Coaching academy and now into breath work coaching.

This episode is great as we dive into some great topics:

  • How she grew up and what inspired her

  • Her father influencing her

  • Changing career paths

  • Challenges of changing careers

  • Self Trust

  • What is breathwork?

  • Advice for others to want a path for themselves

This is special podcast as we do a Round Table Discussion, inviting multiple guests that have common interests and goals.

This week I interview four other members of the Maverick Coaching academy, which are all business owners trying to make their own name brand to help make an impact in the fitness industry.

This episode's guests and their mission:

Jennifer works as a self-love coach, to help people find their soul's purpose.

Kila works as a strength coach that now mentors trainers to educate their clients.

Megan with great experience as an athletic therapist, focuses on empowerment to help people move freely without pain, focuses on person-centered healthcare, and mentor to other athletic/physiotherapists.

Shaquelle through personal coaching empowers women to create a loving relationship with their bodies while developing a healthy lifestyle with her mindful positivity system.

In this episode, we dive into what makes their business each unique, what challenges them most as a business owner, what inspires them the most, and what's their biggest ambition in their business.

The most interesting thing about this episode is that we expose ourselves to our flaws as business owners trying to make it work, but also really express that passion and desire to create the positive change we want to see in the world. All the stories are similar in the attitude and energy, but unique stories within the perspective of what is behind the fire that drives us forward.

Jodi Toews

How to live determined and live a dream life in the Mountains.

Could you imagine changing career paths 3 times?

Could you move your whole life along the way so you could live closer to the mountains?

Well that's Jodi's story.

Jodi Toews was a coworker of mine at my first gym of employment, Focus Fitness. She began in a small town of Killarney Manitoba, and chased a passion for the sport of Volleyball to take her to High level as a ticket out of the small town. Although she initially studied Fine Arts, she discovered an interest in perusing Athletic Therapy at the University of Manitoba.

After years of working as an AT and Trainer at Focus Fitness, she discovered an opportunity to take an internship out west to Calgary, without even knowing there was a job possibility after. She risked it to be closer to the mountains, and it worked out to get her a full-time position after. Jodi still desired to be even closer to the mountains, and so she took a leap to start her own graphic design business moving farther west to BC where she currently resides.

This is great conversation to discover the mindset it takes to jump career paths, and move your life with determination and courage. Jodi has a goal oriented mindset, and when she sees something she wants, she goes after it. We dive into her story and the mindset challenges she had to manage along the way.

Jodi Toews Design is a graphic design studio focused on helping business owners in the health and exercise science industry build strong clear brands they are excited to share.  They do this through strategic branding, logos and websites.

JT Smith was one of the founders of United Boxing Club with Ryan Savage. They started with renting space from community clubs, until one day they found their own space. United grew with high quality athletes and as a Level 4 Boxing Coach, JT helped take athletes all the way to National Gold.

This is a great episode to understand importance of what to know as a young up and coming athlete. JT gives great advice to recognize the importance of the system of how amateur sport is organized, understand the rules of the sport, and the value of a certified coach that can help so much.

When I first started in boxing competitively at United, JT was the first person I spoke with after the first class, I was sold. He has the insight of the sport from his experience and has a great technical approach to teaching athletes. Enjoy this episode and take some notes, as I know I even did when he went into some details of the high end national level requirements for carded athletes.

4:13 - Jt introduces himself

29:55 - Difference between Technique vs. Strategy

33:15 - The boxing equation

35:00 -  Rhyland reacts - exchanges reactionary, everything happens so fast it’s reactionary

37:50 - Coach is greatest honest feedback

38:50 - JT story about Gfs dad “ You more you know, the more you realize you don’t know”

40:50 - Have some respect because most people are doing this for free

42:11 - Drills importance

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

AJ Zeglen has been a strength coach for over a decade, and working with Focus Fitness as their manager. He’s had experience in sport as a football player as running back and played at a college level when he was younger. He fell in love with the gym and made it his passion.

When he was growing up the main influences were stars like Arnold Shwartzner, and so this lead AJ into the realm of body building as well. AJ has competed at 5 shows, and one he had done just 4 years ago while I was working beside him at Focus Fitness. It was inspiring to see your boss go through such an epic challenge, and he ended up placing 2nd overall.

AJ is one of my biggest mentors I’ve ever had, and specifically in the realm of Training and Nutrition. He’s knowledge to this day blows me away with how vast his understanding is.

This is a great conversation about the major mistakes and misconceptions people make around strength training. Everything from going to little or too hard. And we finish off with a really good discussions about the unique challenges that go into the art of body building. Great conversation and a lot to learn from.

Mellissa Skibinski was a coworker of Rhyland’s at his first gym of employment, Focus Fitness. She graduated from The University of Manitoba with a degree in Athletic Therapy, and returned later to obtain her Masters in Physiotherapy in 2014.

Mel’s impressive and ambitious mindset originates from both her environment growing up, as well as from within. Even from an early age her mother would have to tell her that she should 'slow down' and she was always trying to do too much. Mel relates that her ambition comes from a sense of pride, her environment growing up, and from the dedication/drive she sees in the athletes that she works with.

This conversation dives into the importance of having the will to try even in the face of uncertainty. When you run into obstacles that range from starting a family to owning a successful business during a pandemic, it is important to always keep pushing and managing your time appropriately to accomplish your goals.

Ryan Savage was my boxing coach when I was competitive a United Boxing Club, and he was the founder of the organization with JT Smith. He as an incredible resume of boxing, being on the national team for 7 years, and champion in his division for 3 of those years.

He transitioned into being a coach because he got his call to the bar. Upon beginning United, he was able to foster a program and resulted in 4 national level boxers at the same time within the first ten years of opening.

Ryan did not stop there. He then had the gym start up their own boxing event and Charity fundraiser called the Melee Gala, in which it always features the Canadian National Team vs. other international teams, plus featuring local talent, which has raised over hundred thousand dollars over the many years United has put it on.

His current ambition is with now being the President of Boxing Canada and trying to help improve big picture problems to assist the sport across the entire nation! Did I mention he does this ALL as a volunteer? Ryan is a full-time lawyer, husband, and a father of two kids.

I don’t know how he does it all, but in this interview, you can hear some great wisdom towards how he applies his mindset. Listen to this episode and find out more about how Ryan can motivate himself to get things done.

Episode 2 - Brandt Butt

What parallelism does boxing has in our life?

As in boxing and life, winning and losing are a part of it. Whatever you go through, as long as you put your best fighting form each time, you are in for something great.

Brandt Butt is an Investment Advisor at the award-winning firm Endeavour Wealth Management. In 2020 Brandt was a finalist for the Future Leaders of Manitoba award, recognizing individuals who display strong leadership in their professional contributions and outstanding service in the community through volunteerism. His work is focused on creating comprehensive financial plans for professionals, business owners, and their families.

Before wealth management, Brandt was a National Team member for the Canadian Amateur Boxing Team. Today he is a proud member of the community, and when he’s not in the office, he can be found at United Boxing Club as the head coach to their competitive program. In February 2016, Brandt started a non-contact boxing program to help individuals with Parkinson's keep active and fight back against their disease.

In this episode, Brandt talks about the many lessons and metaphors boxing has taught him that he translates to his personal life and business. With those winning and losing, he only has one thing to say, not to lose your focus and always keep an eye on what you are trying to achieve. He shows an interesting side of him, how he is during his boxing fights -- keeping calm, relaxing, and joking around. What brilliant point to ponder that in life, wouldn’t it be nice to keep calm and relaxed so we clear our mind and think of a better game plan for a solution in whatever struggles we have? There is also so much to take a glean from Brandt says -- stress and rest equals growth. How we work so hard in life and how life throws different kinds of stuff our way, it is just but right to also take a breather and savor those moments when we can free ourselves from all the concerns so that we can come back energized and ready to start to win again in life. Just as in boxing and business, one thing that’s relevant throughout is the thought that you have to do things right, how you need to put your heart into what you do and passionate about for it will take care of the rest -- money and success.

“Whatever you're doing in life, whatever you're passionate about, just go out and do it right and do it the right way, and success will come.”

- Brandt Butt

Episode 1 - Dr. Raymond Lavoie

Raymond Lavoie, PhD is an Assistant Professor at Merrimack College. He is a passionate consumer behaviour researcher with an expertise on the state of flow. His  research advances the concept of flow, its role in marketing and it’s influence on consumers. He is grateful to be able to apply his knowledge of positive psychology to benefit youth through the Higher Learning Foundation and in the classes he teaches.

In this episode, find out these two dimensions of absorption and fluency that helps you attain the state of flow. Discover how you can utilize flow to bring positive things in your every day life. As flow emerges naturally, find those activities, tasks, activities or whatever it is that  you’re interested in because that’s where you’ll find it there. What brings flow to you is that which are your favorite activities and that which ignites passion in you. Find that which interests you for that is where the absorption component of flow comes in and once you get to do it more and become good at what you do that’s when you find fluency.

See how flow benefits  the marketing aspect of businesses. In Netflix, for instance, find out how they reinforce flow in their continuous pop up of content you watch next. They have their algorithms set up in themed content so they know what’s relevant to you. And that provides an interrupted flow of binge-watching. Notice how flow underlies the addictive nature of social media and online gambling. This is how to get consumers in flow.

Much as there are positive things to it, there are also dangers to flow. It extracts you from reality making you more absorbed into what you do at the risk of losing touch with your relationships. But other than that, flow’s great and it provides a ton of value for everyone.

“Seek out things that will naturally draw your attention in and be fluent. And you can help yourself by looking for the positive in activities, or things that are going well, things are going good to help you focus your attention on it.”
